This is a gateway drug to addiction - read it at your peril!

I came across Catherine on social media. I wasn't an existing fan. In fact I didn't even know that Catherine was an author. I soon learned that she wrote novels, so intrigued I decided to give one of her books a try. This one was on a promotion so I purchased it to add to my bedside reading pile.I wasn't a big fan of this genre, I tend to read biographies by choice, so it was a while before I picked it up to read. But boy! When I did I couldn't put it down. I finished the whole book in just two sittings. I have now bought another three books by Catherine and I consider myself a convert. If you haven't read any of Catherine's work then do yourself a big favour and rectify that situation soon.

A very quick and enjoyable read and a delightfully-unique take on the "haunted house" sub-genre.

I don't want to say too much about this one as I feel a lot of the joy of it lies in discovering its clever and thought-provoking nuances throughout the read itself, which I found to be pleasantly chilling, captivating, and flush with detail in ways that were both immediately and consistently satisfying. If you're looking for a rock-solid supernatural/paranormal excursion, do take a trip to "The House at the End of Lacelean Street." You won't regret it!

A Fantastic Psychological Horror

This book was a mesmerizing fever dream and I couldn’t get enough of it. I’m usually a slow reader but I burned through it in only a couple of sittings. One thing is certain and that’s Catherine McCarthy can write. I loved the way she blended psychological horror with what could have been a Twilight Zone episode. If you’ve been looking for a haunting, atmospheric read with a twist of cosmic mystery, look no further. Highly recommended.

Great novella

I’ve never before read anything by this author but I’m now a fan. I immensely enjoyed this novella, wherein three amnesiac strangers find themselves in a mysterious house, searching for their pasts and inching toward tentative bittersweet realizations. Featuring unexpected turns and realistic characters, the story isn’t exactly horror, nor is it fantasy, but is something all its own. A satisfying and enjoyable read that’s over all too quickly.

Left me wanting

I really wanted to love this book. The reader is drawn into the story from the very beginning. The author keeps the reader turning the page as we are drawn to each character and their stories. Like the characters, we want to know who they are and what brought them to the house on Lacelean Street. However, although the characters seemed to be satisfied with their answers, as a reader, I was not.I am still unsure as to how the words written on the chalkboard have helped them to heal and how spending these days within the house on Lacelean Street has resolved any conflicts they may have been struggling with.

The Author

Catherine McCarthy weaves dark tales on an ancient loom from her farmhouse in West Wales. The House at the End of Lacelean Street is her most recent work of long fiction. Other work includes Mosaic, A Moonlit Path of Madness, and The Wolf and the Favour. Her short fiction has been published in various anthologies and magazines, including those by Black Spot Books, Nosetouch Press, Dark Matter Ink, and House of Gamut. In 2020, she won the Aberystwyth University Prize for her short fiction. Time away from the loom is spent hiking the Welsh coast path or huddled in an ancient graveyard reading Dylan Thomas or Poe.

The Narrator

Mary has the ear, the musicality, and, the voice for accents. She loves characters, and has a zest for life. Which is why she adores audiobooks because you can get a great story “hands-free,” useful while bringing up four kids. What kind of handbag does she use? Why, a backpack, of course! Because she’s a stylish, versatile, go-anywhere, jam-in-as-much-as-possible kind of gal.
