Nearly four years have passed since the events of Rootwork (the first book in The Conjure Series), and the youngest Conway sister, Pee Wee, is now thirteen years old and on the cusp of magical greatness. Ever since the tragedy of 1889, she’s worked tirelessly to practice her Hoodoo and hone her conjure skills so as to right the wrongs done to her family. But as a young Black girl living in the post-Reconstruction era of the segregated South, her growing powers do not go unnoticed. Strange and malevolent forces have descended upon the small Louisiana parish Pee Wee calls home, and she must use her newly acquired conjure skills to fight back. Will she use them for good? Or will she pledge herself to the ghost of a dead Voodoo priestess and the darkness the woman serves in exchange for unlimited power and the promise of generational revenge?

📚 Add A Gathering of Weapons to your reading list:

"Tracy Cross echoes the talented, confident conjure woman she writes about, summoning suspense and menace in this compelling follow-up to Rootwork." Johnny Compton, author of The Spite House and Devils Kill Devils

"A Gathering of Weapons is a worthy follow-up to Rootwork in that it brings the character of Pee Wee back to the forefront with such visceral passion. Tracy Cross deftly weaves enchanting stories that tell about the character's growth, both physically and spiritually, as she learns more and more of what it means to be a conjure woman. This book brims with cultural significance and beautiful storytelling. When you read this, you won't be disappointed." —Scott A. Johnson, author of Through the Witches Stone, Ungeheuer, and Shy Grove: A Ghost Story

"Rootwork is one part magical realism, one part coming of age story, one part examination of American identity, and all parts pure magic. It's unique and spellbinding, and I loved it." —Lisa Morton, six-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award

"With Rootwork, Tracy Cross introduces herself to readers as a gifted storyteller of the highest order. This is a richly folkloric tale of traditions passed down, of community and family, and the lasting links forged through the shared experiences of sisters and the impenetrable bonds that anchor them to their histories and each other. At the heart of Rootwork is its plucky, free-spirited heroine, Pee Wee Conway, who is certain to beguile readers of all ages." -Vince A. Liaguno, Bram Stoker Award-winning editor of Unspeakable Horror: From the Shadows of the Closet and Other Tales: An Inclusive Anthology

"Rootwork fearlessly brings folk horror to the Deep South. Tracy Cross paints a dark portrait of Black family life, with all the wisdom of our ancestors-their accomplishments, their sorrows, their unresolved hope and rage-and in doing so delivers uniquely American horror without pulling any punches. If you're a fan of historical fiction and tales of the supernatural, this book will resonate with you long after you're done reading it." —John Edward Lawson, author of Bibliophobia

"Rootwork transported me to another world, on I was unfamiliar with but thoroughly enjoyed. Blending history, hoodoo, and horror elements, Tracy Cross delivers a compelling narrative with characters I sincerely hope to meet again. I really did feel like I was right there alongside Pee Wee and Aunt Teddy." —Janine Pipe, Splatterpunk Award-nominated author of Sausages: The Making of Dog Soldiers

"The power and promise of fiction is the ability to take you places you can't go and do things you'll never do with people you'll never meet. Rootwork delivers on that promise with an engrossing coming-of-age tale set amid the voodoo and hoodoo of backcountry Louisiana in 1889. Tracy Cross works magic with the characters and setting of her debut novel. You will love this book and the people in it." —F. Paul Wilson, author of The Keep

"In A Gathering of Weapons, Cross demonstrates her understanding multiple genres and writing devices. The imagery and dialogue are especially vivid, offering her readers ways to visualize Pee Wee's journey. Integrating elements of historical fiction and magical realism, Cross illustrates the conditions of Black, Brown, and other marginalized peoples while allowing for her characters to gain more control of their circumstances. Experiencing Pee Wee grow more into herself and her abilities is so affirming to me as a Black woman living in current times." —Nicole Young-Martin, Producer & Host, Black Writers Read

4.25/5 ⭐️ New Orleans Historical Fiction-YES!The second installment of Little House on the Hoodoo Prairie did not disappoint! These Conjure Series novellas read like an episode of a much darker version of Little House on the Prairie. This is real story telling that does not rely on tricks and tropes. This series is based on tradition and generational stories that have been passed down. Our young main character, Pee Wee has gained confidence in her abilities after she is seperated from her family and is being trained in Rootwork by her Aunt Teddy. Two years later she sees herself as being the greatest Conjure Woman. She struggles with maintaining her moral compassion when faced with an opportunity to become more powerful. Will she be tempted by darker magic? Read the Conjure Series and find out.I highly recommend the Conjure series by Tracey Cross.Book one- RootworkBook two-A Gathering of WeaponsI received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
