Letter from the Editor: The Great God, Ethos

By Rob Carroll

Let’s start with a quote from Steve Jobs:

“When you’re young, you look at television and think there’s a conspiracy. The networks[1] have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that’s not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want.”

The quote is not revelatory by any means, nor is it entirely fair, but it’s no surprise coming from the mouth of Jobs. His disdain for lazy, uninspired mass production was no secret. His publicly stated mission was to give people not the thing they wanted, but rather, the thing they never knew they wanted in the first place.
